Tiruppur Knitwear Finds Global Embrace Through Green Progress And Steady Growth
Share Post

Tiruppur, the vibrant hub of Indian knitwear, has emerged as a beacon of resilience and sustainable growth in the global apparel landscape. In the last financial year, 2024-25, Tiruppur exported knitwear worth 40,000 crore, marking an impressive 20 percent rise from the 33,400 crore recorded in 2023-24. This leap surpassed the anticipated 10 percent growth, and projections now suggest a further 15 percent climb in the current year.

The recovery journey for Tiruppur’s textile industry has not been without challenges. Global headwinds like the Ukraine-Russia conflict had slowed the momentum, but coordinated efforts, innovations, and international support helped the sector regain its stride. A major pillar of this recovery lies in the region’s commitment to green practices, which has earned it renewed attention from global buyers.

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) technology, through which 13 crore litres of water are recycled daily with a 96 percent reuse rate, has become a hallmark of Tiruppur’s eco-conscious operations. In addition, the use of renewable power 2,000 MW from wind and 250 MW from solar underscores the sector’s shift toward clean energy. Out of this, 350 MW is used directly in production, while the remainder supports the state grid.

Beyond technology, nature plays its part too. With 2.2 million trees planted and a survival rate of 90 percent, Tiruppur shows that fashion can grow with the earth, not against it.

The region’s exporters continue to receive strong orders from global brands, especially from the United States and Europe. While challenges remain, such as high raw material costs compared to regional competitors, the industry’s momentum remains firm. With supportive infrastructure, accessible credit, and policy backing, Tiruppur is not just exporting fabric but a vision of sustainable progress.
