Ludhiana, once celebrated as the beating heart of India’s knitwear and hosiery landscape, is now grappling with a challenging reality. A growing chorus of voices from the city’s textile industry is calling for urgent innovation and reform in response to mounting global competition, red tape, and lack of robust government support.

In a recent gathering titled "Challenges and Opportunities in the Ludhiana Textile Industry," organised jointly by the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) and ITMA, stakeholders from across the value chain came together to chart a future course. The event drew leaders from the United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association (UCPMA), the Knitwear Club, and various industry veterans, all sharing a common concern the need to reinvent.

Jagbir Singh Sokhi, president of the Ludhiana Sewing Machine Association, spoke about the disconnect between machinery upgrades and ground-level adoption, while Vinod Thapar, chairman of the Knitwear Club, underlined the need for integrated policies that support not just production but innovation in design and value addition. From outdated machinery to fragmented supply chains and lack of skill development initiatives, multiple factors are seen as roadblocks to Ludhiana’s revival.

Despite these hurdles, the spirit of collaboration at the event hinted at a brighter future. Industry leaders called for technology integration, design-led manufacturing, and global market access to steer Ludhiana back on track. With the right blend of policy support and innovation, this once-mighty textile titan can once again stitch together a story of success.
