H&m Foundation's Engagement With Panipat's Textile Industry

A group from the H&M Foundation and the Global Fashion Agenda traveled to Panipat, a major center for recycling textiles. Their goal was to discuss ways to work together to create a textile industry that reuses materials and involves everyone. The Global Alliance for Textile Sustainability Council organized the visit to help move the world closer to a more sustainable way of making and using clothes.

According to Apparel Resources India, the group that visited Panipat included Lennart Bernhoft, the chief operating officer of GFA, as well as Carola Tembe, Jodith Tesfai, and Elin Hallerby from the H&M Foundation. They were greeted by Parvinder Singh, the chairman of GATS, and his team, who showed them how Panipat effectively turns waste materials into new products.

The main focus of the visit was on three important areas making textile waste recycling bigger, finding ways to make recycled materials worth more money, and improving safety and fairness for workers, especially those who don't have formal jobs. These topics show the larger aims of creating a strong, reuse-based economy where all workers are treated fairly.

GATS also shared its plan to help Panipat evolve from being primarily a center for recycling materials for home goods into a place where clothing brands can source their garments. This would be supported by training local people in new skills and encouraging the use of circular design methods. The H&M Foundation's current work in the area through GFA's Green Threads & Weaves' project with the Foundation for MSME Clusters was presented as a way to help local businesses adopt sustainable ways of operating.
