Strengthening Bangladesh–France Apparel Ties

In a move aimed at expanding Bangladesh’s footprint in the European apparel market, a high-level delegation from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) met with Julien Deur, Head of the Economic Department at the Embassy of France in Dhaka. The discussion centered on unlocking new opportunities for bilateral trade, with a particular focus on ready-made garment (RMG) exports.

The BGMEA delegation included Vice President (Finance) Mijanur Rahman, Director Shah Rayeed Chowdhury, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Trade Fair and Events M Sajedul Karim, and Chairman of the Standing Committee on France Market Development Md Shofiqul Alam. Together, both sides explored practical pathways to enhance market access and build stronger commercial bridges between Bangladeshi manufacturers and French buyers.

France remains an important European destination for Bangladesh’s apparel exports, and the meeting signaled a shared intent to move the partnership beyond conventional trade toward structured, long-term collaboration.

Focus on Market Access, Matchmaking and Green Financing

The dialogue went beyond traditional trade discussions, addressing emerging priorities shaping global sourcing decisions. Key areas of focus included:

  • Expanding market access for Bangladeshi RMG products
  • Strengthening direct business linkages between manufacturers and French brands
  • Organising structured matchmaking initiatives
  • Promoting participation in trade fairs and marketplace platforms
  • Exploring green financing mechanisms to support sustainability upgrades

Both sides acknowledged that sustainability is no longer optional but a strategic necessity. Discussions highlighted the need for environmentally responsible production systems, investment in circular technologies, and adherence to robust compliance standards.

The idea of green financing gained particular attention, with stakeholders recognising its potential to help factories invest in energy efficiency, water conservation and carbon reduction initiatives areas increasingly scrutinised by European buyers.

Projecting Bangladesh’s Sustainable Progress Globally

Another important theme of the meeting was global perception. Participants stressed the importance of showcasing Bangladesh’s progress in:

  • Workplace safety improvements
  • Responsible manufacturing practices
  • Sustainability certifications and compliance frameworks
  • Technological advancement in circular production

By proactively communicating these achievements, Bangladesh aims to strengthen its positioning as a reliable and responsible sourcing hub in Europe.

The discussion reflects a broader shift in global apparel trade, where value addition, transparency and sustainability are becoming central to competitiveness. Through closer engagement with France, BGMEA is seeking not just higher export volumes but deeper integration into European supply chains built on trust, innovation and shared sustainability goals.
