Brugnoli Launches 89% Bio‑Based Performance Fabric Br4/E1

Italian textile maker Brugnoli, known for producing high‑quality circular knit fabrics for sportswear, swimwear, lingerie, and active apparel, has introduced a major bio‑based fabric breakthrough at the Performance Days 2026 trade fair in Munich. The company showcased a new technical textile called Br4/E1, designed to offer excellent performance while significantly reducing environmental impact — a major step forward in eco‑friendly sports textiles.

The standout feature of Br4/E1 is its high bio‑based content. With 89 % of its material coming from renewable and plant‑based sources, this fabric significantly reduces reliance on traditional petroleum‑derived synthetics, which are commonly used in performance textiles. Despite being largely bio‑based, the fabric still delivers key performance qualities such as excellent stretch, durability, comfort, and fit, making it suitable for demanding activewear garments like leggings and tops.

This innovation is the result of collaboration between three major players in the textile materials field: Brugnoli’s own patented Br4 technology, Evo yarn from Fulgar, and Lycra EcoMade fibre from The Lycra Company. Each partner contributes unique strengths to the fabric’s overall performance and sustainability profile.

At the core of Br4/E1 is Brugnoli’s Br4 process, a specialized production system for elastic polyamide‑based fabrics. This technology is engineered to be more sustainable, cutting water and energy use by around 20 % during dyeing and finishing when compared to conventional methods. This improvement helps lower the fabric’s overall environmental footprint without compromising quality.

The Evo yarn from Fulgar is another key component. It is a 100 % bio‑based polyamide fibre made from renewable sources such as castor oil and industrial corn. According to lifecycle assessments completed in 2024, Evo offers substantial environmental benefits — reducing climate change impact by about 45 % and lowering ecotoxicity by 86 % when compared with traditional polyamide 6.6. This means the fabric not only performs well but also contributes less to harmful environmental effects.

Completing the fabric’s composition is Lycra EcoMade, a bio‑based elastane developed by The Lycra Company. Made from roughly 70 % renewable industrial corn, this fibre delivers excellent elasticity and recovery — essential features for activewear — while reducing the carbon footprint by up to 44 % compared with conventional elastane.

Br4/E1’s public debut at Performance Days was accompanied by a display of finished sportswear items, such as a set of activewear comprising a top and leggings, showing how this new fabric performs in real‑world apparel. These demonstrations highlighted how sustainable materials can meet the demands of performance‑focused consumers without sacrificing comfort or functionality.

Brugnoli has been exploring bio‑based textile solutions since 2015, steadily expanding its portfolio through ongoing research and partnerships with innovative fibre producers. The launch of Br4/E1 reinforces the company’s long‑term commitment to driving sustainability in the technical textile industry, while still meeting high performance standards required by modern sportswear brands and consumers.
