Navi Mumbai is steadily emerging as a model city in sustainable textile waste management through its innovative Textile Recovery Facility (TRF), an initiative developed under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) 2.0 program. At a time when textile waste is becoming a major environmental concern due to fast fashion consumption and rising urban disposal, this facility is demonstrating how waste can be transformed into opportunity. By systematically collecting, segregating and processing discarded garments and fabric materials, the TRF is helping reduce landfill pressure while promoting resource recovery and circular economy practices.
The facility operates on a structured system where textile waste collected from households, commercial establishments and institutions is carefully sorted based on fibre type, usability and recycling potential.
