Ecco Unveils World’s First Shoe Made with Leather Waste Fibre
Share Post

Footwear brand Ecco has introduced what it describes as the world’s first shoe made using textile fibre derived from leather production waste, marking a major milestone in sustainable footwear innovation. Developed in partnership with Finnish fibre technology specialist Spinnova, the new limited-edition Ecco Biom 720 demonstrates how industrial by-products can be transformed into high-value consumer products.

The launch is the result of a five-year collaboration between the two companies. The fibre used in the shoe has been created through Respin, a joint venture equally owned by Ecco and Spinnova, originally established in 2020 together with leather supplier KT Trading. The initiative focuses on converting leather waste generated during manufacturing into reusable textile fibre, helping reduce waste while creating new material opportunities. Traditionally, leather by-products from production processes have posed environmental and disposal challenges. By converting this waste stream into textile fibre, the collaboration introduces a circular approach where discarded materials are reintegrated into new products rather than sent to landfill. This reflects a growing movement across the fashion and footwear industries toward more responsible sourcing and resource efficiency.

The Ecco Biom 720 blends performance footwear design with sustainability, offering consumers a product that combines comfort, style, and material innovation. It also demonstrates that eco-friendly products can meet commercial and aesthetic expectations rather than remain niche concepts. Industry analysts see the launch as an important example of how brands can rethink traditional manufacturing waste. As pressure rises on global footwear companies to lower environmental impact, reduce raw material dependence, and embrace circular business models, innovations like leather waste fibre could become increasingly significant.

The Biom 720 may be limited edition today, but its broader importance lies in showing what future footwear production could look like. If scaled successfully, such technologies may help reshape the industry by turning waste into one of its most valuable resources.
